It was exciting to read the titles shortlisted in the CBCA annual Book Week Awards yesterday. Some of our favourite titles we have been reading are on the list – Yr 6 are happy to see ‘Then’ while some of our younger students will be cheering for ‘Sunday Chutney’. I’m very pleased to see that one of our local authors, Sandy Fussell has ‘Polar Boy’ listed, so locals in the north of Wollongong, NSW will have their fingers crossed for Sandy!
What titles have YOU read so far?

Well, what did you think of the winners in each category? At our school, no group in either Stage 2 or Stage 3 were able to pick the Winner and Honours in the Early Childhood and Picture Book categories, but 3 came VERY close!
We were rapt that Parsley Rabbit won the Eve Pownall, as David Legge had just visited our school and last year, Frances Watts visited! We were also pleased to see that ‘Cat’ and ‘Pearl Barley’ received awards.
We have just purchased a new Aaron Blabey book – ‘Sunday Chutney’ – have you read it yet?
Book Week’s over for another year…..the theme for next year is…….’BOOK SAFARI’ !
Thanks to all who left comments and answers to questions – congratulations to Aurora who picked her way through the clues to locate the correct answer re Pearl Barley. Now, I don’t know if this is really why Aaron Blabey named his characters….might have to ask him one day if I get the chance!!

Yes, he’s certainly a character, isn’t he? Loves to visit the neighbours – but just how does he manage to visit Dog?
What do you know about the little girl in the book?
You’ll need to study the illustrations – and certainly the endpapers to get the full story!
Send your answers via the ‘comment’ below!

Where exactly did Aaron Blabey find the inspiration for the names of his characters ‘Pearl Barley’ and ‘Charlie Parsley’?
Is he a fan of jazz?
Does he have a soft spot for the musical theatre of the 1950’s?
Mrs Mac’s Book Week page has the clues….will you be the first to work it out??

The CBC shortlist was announced today and includes some ‘regulars’ – Pamela Allen, Margaret Wild, Jackie French,Carole Wilkinson, Bob Graham as well as newcomers Elise Hurst, Liz Lofthouse, Aaron Blabey. Librarians around Australia will now be ordering frantically to ensure their library has the books by August 16th! Like last year, I had purchased some of the books already, but others I haven’t even seen in bookshops!
Now to think of some display ideas related to the theme……..
